Gestalt Therapy is uniquely suited to couples work with its emphasis on co-creation and its foundational belief that I can only know myself through the other. However working with couples is challenging in the beginning for therapists who are accustomed to intrapersonal discovery in the office. This four session workshop offers direction and support to those therapists who would like to work with couples.
Learning Objectives:
Engage the couple in awakening their curiousity rather than go into the content
Support what is — Paradoxical Change Theory is a hallmark of the Gestalt approach: this applies to both strengths and dysfunctions
Recognize presence of trauma and shame within the couple interaction
Identify ongoing methods of self-support and self-awareness, and the humility of this work
Identify process vs content orientation to avoid becoming part of the problem within the couples system
Avoid becoming triangulated in couples’ unexpressed needs
Recognize the language of the body – paying attention to mini adjustments between one another as keys to how the couples system works
Apply Gestalt methods such as awareness building, language of responsibility, and experimentation to assist couple in broadening the perspective to see the other’s point of view
Identify when to use individual therapy within the relationship context
